Love can bring two people together, but love alone does not automatically teach two people how to stay together.

A relationship can begin with butterflies, long conversations, deep attraction, and promises about the future. But eventually, real life shows up.

There will be misunderstandings.

There will be stressful days.

30 Simple Ways to Make Your Partner Feel Loved

September 15, 2026

That is where the real work of a relationship begins.

If I want my relationship to succeed, I have to understand that the goal is not to avoid every problem. The goal is to learn how to handle problems without destroying the connection.

Here are 7 important do’s and don’ts for a relationship to succeed.

1. Do communicate honestly. Don’t expect your partner to read your mind.

One of the most painful things in a relationship is feeling like, “If they really loved me, they would know.”

But people cannot always know what I need unless I tell them.

If something hurts me, I should learn to communicate it instead of silently collecting resentment.

Instead of:

“You never care about me.”

I can say:

“I felt unimportant when that happened, and I would like us to talk about it.”

Honest communication gives a relationship a chance to heal.

Silent resentment rarely does.

2. Do listen to understand. Don’t listen only to defend yourself.

Sometimes couples are not really having conversations. They are having two separate arguments at the same time.

One person is speaking while the other is already preparing a response.

A successful relationship requires listening.

Not every conversation is about proving who is right.

Sometimes my partner simply needs to know that I understand why something hurt them.

I can disagree with someone’s perspective and still respect their feelings.

3. Do show appreciation. Don’t take your partner for granted.

One of the easiest ways to slowly weaken a relationship is to become so familiar with someone’s love that I stop noticing it.

The calls become ordinary.

The sacrifices become expected.

The little acts of kindness become invisible.

Then one day, the person who used to feel appreciated begins to feel taken for granted.

Say thank you.

Notice the effort.

Acknowledge the little things.

Tell your partner when they make your life better.

People should not have to become strangers before we realize how much they were doing for us.

4. Do resolve conflict respectfully. Don’t use cruelty as a weapon.

Arguments are normal.

Disrespect does not have to be.

There is a huge difference between saying, “I am angry about what happened” and attacking someone’s character.

Avoid insults, humiliation, threats, bringing up every past mistake, or deliberately saying something painful just to win an argument.

The goal should be to solve the problem, not destroy the person standing across from me.

I should remember that tomorrow I may still love the person I am angry with today.

5. Do maintain healthy boundaries. Don’t lose yourself in the relationship.

Love should bring two people closer, but it should not erase their individuality.

I can love someone deeply and still have personal goals, friendships, interests, values, and time for myself.

A healthy relationship should not require me to become a completely different person just to keep someone.

There is a difference between compromise and self-abandonment.

Compromise says:

“How can we make this work for both of us?”

Self-abandonment says:

“I will keep hurting myself so you won’t leave.”

Those are not the same thing.

6. Do keep choosing each other. Don’t assume love will take care of itself.

Relationships need attention.

A couple can live in the same house and slowly become emotionally disconnected.

Work gets busy.

Children need attention.

Bills arrive.

Stress increases.

Conversations become about responsibilities instead of feelings.

That is why couples need intentional connection.

Talk.

Laugh together.

Go on dates when possible.

Put the phones away sometimes.

Ask, “How are you really doing?”

Remember what made you fall in love.

A relationship can survive busy seasons, but it still needs moments where both people feel chosen.

7. Do grow together. Don’t stop caring about the relationship.

People change.

Life changes.

Responsibilities change.

What worked five years ago may not work today.

A successful relationship requires two people who are willing to keep learning each other.

Ask questions.

Talk about your dreams.

Discuss money, family, intimacy, faith, career, parenting, and the future.

Do not assume that because you have known someone for years, you know everything about them.

Sometimes the person beside me is still becoming someone new.

And loving them means being willing to meet them there.

The Bottom Line

A relationship does not succeed because two people never hurt each other.

It succeeds when two people care enough to repair what has been damaged.

I should not expect perfection from my partner.

But I should expect respect.

I should not expect every disagreement to disappear.

But I should expect both of us to care about how we handle disagreement.

And most importantly, I should remember this:

Love is not just about finding the right person. It is also about learning how to love the person I have chosen well.

Save this for the days when your relationship needs a reminder that love is something we don’t just feel.

It is something we practice.
